RURAL BROADBAND
NETWORKING & WIFI
‘Broadband Not Spots’ are common across Pembrokeshire and more recently the Welsh Government have agreed to subsidise the installation of Community Wifi as an effective alternative to the regular cabled broadband.
Community Wifi enables broadband to be brought to your property through the air like a TV signal rather than down a telephone wire. Based on an infrastructure installed by regional Internet Service Providers (ISPs), rural communities as small as just five properties can receive download speeds in excess of 6MBs and upload speeds over 4MBs - a system that outperforms broadband speeds in many urban towns and cities.
Using ground based ‘point to point’ links, the Community WiFi networks can be linked to homes and businesses through installation of a small antenna to the outside of the property (often only the size of a pencil case). Instant response times make this system ideal for online gaming, internet phones like skype and vonage, webcam video conferencing as well as supporting Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
The benefits to individuals such as farmers, holiday parks & cottages, artists and the RNLI are proving to be invaluable. 1a Aerials has recently linked remote spots in Whitesands and Tretio via Community Wifi and is currently assisting with the roll out to other hamlets and villages within the area.
