The Starlink service is ‘low earth orbit’, meaning the dish (antenna) connects to multiple satellites 550km away moving around the earth. This enables an internet signal to connect with the end user (you) with a 0.05 second delay (same as most landlines), providing a more efficient service than the original geostationary satellite broadband systems (linking to satellites 36,000km away incurring a 1.5 second delay, not ideal for gaming, voice calls, or zoom/video conferencing scenarios).

Starlink Mini or Standard?

Starlink Mini was designed for use on the road and to be easily transportable for set up in different locations. The antenna is smaller than the Standard version yet receives signal just as effectively. The key difference is that the Mini antenna is also the wireless access point (devices can connect directly to the WiFi signal transmitting from it) and the Standard antenna requires a separate wireless access point (which comes as part of the package).

In June 2026, Starlink restricted the £40/mth data package for new customers to the Mini only, meaning households who prefer this budget cannot order the Standard kit without paying for the more expensive packages.

It is possible for a professional like us to securely install a Mini antenna and also provide an access point which your devices can connect to within the property for a comparable cost to the Standard kit – just ask us for details when you get in touch.

Free Starlink installation in Wales

If your property is eligible, we can install your Starlink antenna for you free of charge (scroll for info on Welsh Government funding). We cover Pembrokeshire and some parts of Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.

To use Starlink, you will need to create an account with them and organise purchasing the equipment yourself (there is a way around not renting (but buying) the equipment outright).

Currys are also retailing the kit for delivery or Click and Collect – if you purchase this way, you can link your kit to your Starlink account using the serial number from the box.

It is possible to set up the kit yourself using the instructions provided and Starlink offers a ‘no frills’ basic installation  for £75 – this is if you’re not too particular about where the antenna sits or where cables are routed (nationally organised companies coordinate these requests for a specific price).

If you would prefer a specialist like 1A Aerials to manage this part of the process (you may prefer someone to spend more time planning and designing cable routes bespokely) ask us to complete a survey. We will advise on; the most effective location for the antenna, secure & tidy mounting/cable routing plus recommendations on how to network WiFi throughout your home/business (which isn’t covered in the national £75 installation).
