I was in Little Haven today replacing yet another rusty sky dish with a Weatherproof Fibreglass Dish that can brave the Pembrokeshire coastal sea air.
The dish in question was only three years old and like many others, was falling apart beyond repair.
SMC (or Sheet Moulded Composite) dishes work in the same way but are totally different in construction to withstand coastal weather and sea air.
A similar shaped metal mesh dish is totally encased in layers of composite materials including glass fibre which makes the main reflector totally impervious to rust.
The only exposed metal on the dish is the rear hanger and alignment assembly, which is heavily galvanized and the support arm for the LNB (Low Noise Bloc) is aluminium. The LNB is a box of electronics on the end of the arm that sticks out and is the business end of the dish.
Whilst these dishes will cost more to have installed, from many years of experience in coastal locations, standard sky dishes can fail in under two years if sufficiently exposed, whereas, of all the Weatherproof dishes I have installed over the last fifteen years, I have not been called back to a single one for corrosion.
The brand I use mostly starts at 60cm x 65cm round. (Sky minidish 44cm x 59cm) and come in a near white grey and a dark charcoal grey.
They can also be painted to blend into the background for a small charge. (See here for an example of one I painted near Solva)
Today’s customer chose the near white colour to blend in with the new white paint job just being started on the house.
